Guide on the Side: How do I use it?

Guide for using Guide on the Side tutorial software.

Getting Started

Guide on the Side is installed for each PALNI institution on the website.[institution]/guide_on_the_side/login

Please contact Lauren Magnuson at lauren @ to have an instance set up for your institution.

The University of Arizona has an excellent walkthrough for how to create a tutorial here:

Customizing/Theming Guide on the Side

If you're interested in theming Guide on the Side, check out the work Cort Eyer has done at University of Saint Francis:

Saint Francis Guide on the Side Index

If you would like your Guide on the Side to have a different color scheme or use different color schemes or icons, you can send me your campus' brand guidelines (e.g., fonts, colors, etc.) and I can do a mockup of what the styling might look like.  If you don't want to use your campus' brand guidelines, or you have more specific requests for display of your guides, I need to know:

  • What font you'd like to use (if different from the default)
    • You can choose from Google's Fonts
    • I'll also need to know the color you'd like to use, if you want to use something other than what currently displays
  • The background color scheme
    • Choose up to four colors to use on your guides, as shown below:

Four colors optional to customize Guide on the Side

  • Colors 1 and 2 will be used on your Guide's index page, as shown below:

Guide on the side color options on the index page

  • Finally, let me know if you want to use a different icon set for any of the navigational images.  Again, check out the Saint Francis guides to see an example of how icons can be swapped out.

Email your preferences to lauren @  We can always experiment on the PALNI Guide on the Side test area before applying the styling to your guides so that your users don't see your changes until you're ready.
