Defining the Differences

defining the differences

[For Librarians: The purpose of this resource is to provide instructional people the space to differentiate between educational technology services and IT services. As each campus may define these roles differently, there is space provided for those specific roles, services, and differences to be outlined and customized to a campus.]

Knowing the difference between information technology and educational technology can save time and ensure you get the right support when you need it. This section breaks down the two areas so you can better navigate who to contact for help with course design, classroom tools, digital platforms, or troubleshooting tech.

Here are a few foundational ways that EdTech is distinct from IT:

EdTech focuses on:

  • Teaching, learning and pedagogy
  • Instructional design, course delivery, assessment, and learning objectives
  • Working primarily with faculty and academic leadership
  • Classroom technology, the learning management system (LMS), digital accessibility, content creation, software integration
  • Project-based partnerships

IT focuses on:

  • Infrastructure, systems, and operations
  • Supporting all institutional users
  • Network access and performance, hardware maintenance, security
  • High-level LMS issues
  • Service-driven relationships
