Instruction Ideas and Activities: Scholarly Communication

Creative activities RIO librarians use in library instruction

Scholarly Communication - Beth Daniel Lindsay

Scholarly communications/open access session lesson plan. Start with a brief discussion of the scholarly communication cycle, the problem of high cost of subscriptions, and information privilege. Then, divide students into groups and have them answer questions about access on a Jamboard (e.g. how much does it cost for an individual to subscribe? An institution like ours? Etc). Then, come back together and discuss the variety of access issues. Share the actual cost of each of the journals to our library. Discuss how people are trying to work within the system (green open access, unpaywall) and people who fought the system (SciHub).
