Instruction Ideas and Activities: Library Navigation

Creative activities RIO librarians use in library instruction

Library iTour -- Eric Bradley

At Goshen College all traditional first years and transfer students complete a new student orientation which includes a in person library session. For the physical orientation of the library building we developed a "iTour" where students use their iPads to visit several places throughout the library facility. The tour is built as a Moodle Quiz, students go to their first year experience course and find the quiz to complete. The quiz questions guide them throughout the library building, as well as through our electronic resources. The questions are randomized so students are not completing the exact same task at the same time.

Finding a Book - Diane Norton

Have students find a print book that might be relevant to their topic by going to the shelves and physically browsing adjacent books, examining tables of contents and indices. Depending upon the length of the class, the instructor and/or librarian accompany the students to the stacks.  Some instructors require their students to check out at least one relevant book, before leaving the library.
